Rence: I admit, I am very very biased when it comes to Weiß Kreuz, but I am also
picky at the same time. I own over 100 WK doujinshi and there are those I
like, and those I don't like - but keep for various reasons - usually the
Yohji-factor. There are those that I could do without, and those that I
couldn't do without. "Weiße Schokolade" by the circle Weisse Engeln is
definitely a keeper and by it's own merit - and not the Yohji-factor! It
has all the elements in a doujinshi that I like but all in one doujinshi.
It has funny parts (like really funny), cute parts, sweet parts, angsty
parts and more. It's just a well rounded doujinshi of high quality and one
I recommend. I POURED all over this one several times as there was much to
admire.
"Weiße Schokolade" has several segments within it, including a few precious
parodies a la "I am a cat!" and "EWW! What the heck is this gunk all over
my bugnuk?", "Brad is always so fashionable" and "That's one hell of a
growth spurt...Omi" to pull out a few lines from the various parodies. In
fact, the book is full of awesome parodies that were still within character
relative to the parody, well drawn, and unique. The one-page specials like
the Chibi School of Assassins, the Aya vs. Kenshin and Yohji vs. Chocola,
to name a few, are wonderful compliments to the whole work. The
pinups/portraits are just beautiful.
Among the more serious stories featured in the doujinshi is a fun yet
sweet, but also angsty Schuldich X Yohji love story. Again, it is well
rounded, something hard for a story teller to do sometimes and in a short
period of time. It seemed a bit rushed at first and maybe some of the
lines a tad forced, but it turned out well and the moments captured. I wish
it would have been longer. This one was on the moderately explicit side.
Also included is a Schuldich X Yohji X Ken story, in which Schuldich digs
into the mind of an imprisoned Yohji trying to discover his secrets, which
involve Yohji's supressed feelings for Ken along with the self-realization
that he was also supressing Ken's efforts to communicate his own feelings
to Yohji. No explicit yaoi in this one, but a bit angsty and dark. This one
makes use of Christian symbolism which can be offensive to some, but
Weisse Engeln did a very good job keeping it in good taste and seemingly
realistic. I enjoyed both of these stories.
Though the doujinshi had several artists, and displayed the art styles
unique to each artist, the quality was consistently beautiful thoughout. A
lot of times when a doujinshi is drawn by several people or even more than
one circle, there is the misfortune of having one part drawn beautifully
and another part drawn in messy sketches. This is not so with this piece.
Everything was gorgeous. Though not all the styles were ones I considered
my favorites, it did not take away from my enjoyment of the doujinshi.
Even the chibi-drawings were clean and well drawn as opposed to some scary
looking chibi drawings in several other doujinshi that I can name. It has a
professional appearance and is easy to read save for two frames that I
could not read. The front cover is a glossy color image in soft colors,
while the back cover is richly drawn in color. This one is truly a
treasure in my collection and I am so happy to have it. I look forward to
Weisse Englen's next doujinshi and I truly hope there is another one.
