OUR REVIEWERS SAY:
Miyu: "Retsujou", based on Minami Ozaki's work Zetsuai 1989/BRONZE, is a
stunningly beautiful collaberation between two members of Umbrella Studios,
Ashura and Kyoko. This book immediately captures your eye with its vibrant,
two-piece cover. Honestly, the cover itself is my personal favorite part of
this doujinshi. I'm actually having trouble looking away from it while
writing this review.
Inside, the book continues to be a feast for bishounen-lovin' eyes ^_~ Two
stories and three full-page drawings make up the contents. The first story,
by Ashura, is quite sad and makes me wish I knew more about the series it
was based on. As for the layout, the panels are loose and
professional-looking, going along nicely with the artwork, itself which
reminds me of an older shoujou style combined with hints of realism.
After the first story come the three drawings, all by Kyoko, one each of
Koji, Izumi, and the two men embracing. I especially like the one of Izumi
(the short-haired one, right?). Kyoko's drawing style is pure anime,
slightly remeniscent of Watase Yuu's work, and nearly as effective. It's
quite pretty ^_^ Afterwards is Kyoko's story, which, while not as stark in
tone and overly emotional as Ashura's, still flows well and contains the
bittersweet aura that runs through this entire doujinshi. It's quite nice,
as is everything else.
If I did have one (small) complaint to make, it would be that a check of
correct punctuation would have added a further air of professionalism to
this book. Others probably won't be bothered by this as much as I was,
however. It's just one small point of advice. Other than that, this work is
a wonderful example of the possiblities of American doujinshi... I hope to
see many more like it ^_^
