Awaresa: When I first received the Retsujou doujin, my first thoughts were "Wow! This
is a gorgeous cover!" And it's fairly consistent with the inside artwork. A
very well-made doujin; clear pictures, professional shading, professionally
inserted text. It all made for a very appealling package for my first
American Comiket doujin.
However, impressed as I was with the artwork, the stories were very lacking.
"Pray" was nothing more than an opening teaser. I initially skipped over the
artist's intro to attack the doujin itself, but when I went back after
finishing and read it, I couldn't help but wonder just where she had delved
into Hirose's tourmented reasons? A few obvious statements which Hirose
himself as made repeatedly throughout the manga accompanied with some lovely
artwork can't be considered a story. I would have loved for that story to
continue onward with some actual delving, but instead I sniffed and said
"Why was it so short? It was Hirose!! Hirose!!!"
The lovely fanart gallery inserted between the two stories only teased me
more, since I couldn't help but wish they had a story to go along with them
- I am one of those rare fans who actually reads Ozaki Minami for her
stories and not for the lovely men having sex. Even now the lovely pictures
are calling to my colored pencils...
K-chan's story - the second in the doujin - I consider to be an actual
story. Beautiful artwork, character dialogue, angst, and bishounen kissing;
could one hope for anything more? However, again, the story was lacking. It
simply wasn't original. This very scene is in Bronze - one of the translated
chapters online no less - which confused me. The artwork is lovely, but
there's no point to redrawing one of Ozaki's own stories - dialogues even.
An original story would have made K-chan's work absolutely superbe, but
since I've read this all before I was a bit disappointed.
All in all, it is a beautiful doujin. The artwork is gorgeous - I adore
K-chan's softer portrayal of Koji - the presentation is simply wonderful,
and while the story will bother someone who has read the manga, I think it
would make a wonderful introduction to Bronze to a shounenai fan who hasn't
read it and wants to try something new.
