"Blind" is a playful yet bittersweet Yu Yu Hakusho
story centered around Kurama. In the midst of battle against an enemy with the
Urameshi Team, Kurama is blinded while trying to
protect a young girl from their enemy. He in turn
becomes the victim.
Kurama stubbornly keeps his injuries a secret, even as
Yuusuke visits him early one morning on the way to
school. Kurama merely plays it off as nothing, while
Yuusuke becomes amused and perturbed at his friend's
unusual clumsiness.
The doujinshi has its funny moments when Kurama is
taken to school by the hand by Yuusuke who, upon their
arrival, suddenly and unceremoniously dumps him with a
friend and runs away. Poor Kurama is left thinking "Am
I such a burden?" After persuading his new keeper into
doing his homework for him with flowery charm, he sits
in class recalling his last battle.
Paying little attention to his teacher's lessons, he
senses Hiei's undisguised ki outdoors. The little fire
demon was sleeping in the trees. ^-^;
The story progresses more dramatically as Kurama
faints in class, alarming everyone.
He begins to dream. Taking on his fox form, he sees
the girl he had tried to save in his last battle. She
had been hospitalized in hopes she would survive her
attack.
She thereby sorrowfully apologizes for his lost sight
in trying to rescue her and reveals that Kurama was
not only blinded but poisoned; his secret sickness
terminal. Botan enters the dream and takes the girl
away, signifying the girl's passing.
Kurama awakens and Hiei is there with him. Hiei
questions him about his now apparent illness and while
Kurama dances around the topic a bit by teasing Hiei,
he gets a glass full of water in his face.
Hiei then asks if there is an antidote and Kurama
lies, affirming that he could create a botanical
potion to save himself. Yet when Kurama coughs up
blood, Hiei quickly discerns the truth.
Kurama and Hiei stand alone on what appears to be a
cliff. It is then when Kurama wistfully inquires of
his demon friend what Hiei would do if he, Kurama, was
blind. In response, the youkai says that he would be
Kurama's eyes. The story ends with Kurama in Hiei's
arms, unconscious...or quite possibly dead.
There are two following brief but cute tales about
Hiei taking over the world and then another of Hiei
and Kurama drawing graffiti art about Mukuro and Yomi.
Yomi in drag is not a pretty site, I'm afraid...
The word that comes to me for "Blind" is cute. The
main story is sad in its conclusion but the tone of
the doujinshi overall is not solemn but instead
light-hearted. It's something to read after you have
had a nightmare or when you simply want to crack a
smile, like watching an episode of "Care Bears".
Though it is not a comic that would win prizes for
originality, it does win merit for having its own
sense of charm.
