MENOLLY'S REVIEW
Starcrossed is a first effort by creator N.E. Walker, about a boy, Gavin, whose mother was a rock star. Since her death, he lives with his uncle who forbids him to sing except in church. Then Gavin meets Zione, who overhears him singing and invites him to join their band, VOID. From that moment on, everything changes. The art style for Starcrossed is quite unique, if rough in some areas. There are some great composition and paneling choices, exceeding what might be expected from a first-time creator. The faces are stylized distinctly and Walker's art remains fairly consistent over the two issues. The storytelling is quite dreamlike, especially in the first issue, which actually feels stronger in some respects. Gavin's plight did capture my attention and I'm curious to see how he escapes his cruel uncle. The unfortunate aspects of this doujinshi are in the details. Typoes show up here and there, as well as cut-and-paste lines, awkward drafting in some areas, crooked panel borders and the like. I did enjoy this story enough to want to know more, however, and look forward to future efforts by N.E. Walker. [ back ] |
